The service is free, and the ombudsman can award up to ₹50 lakh. A rejected claim, a delayed payout or a policy sold on false promises can leave you feeling there is nowhere to turn. But there is a way. India has a free, two-step system for insurance complaints: the IRDAI grievance redressal process and the Insurance Ombudsman, also called the Bima Lokpal.

What Is the Insurance Ombudsman (Bima Lokpal)?

The Insurance Ombudsman is a free, out-of-court forum for disputes between policyholders and insurers, agents or brokers. It works under the Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017, and its offices are run by the Council for Insurance Ombudsmen (CIO)

You can approach it for life insurance or a general insurance policy, such as health, motor, travel, and other personal policies. Common complaints include claim rejection, partial settlement, delayed payouts, premium disputes and mis-selling. You do not need a lawyer, and the award is binding on the insurer.

How to File an Online Complaint to the Insurance Ombudsman?

Step 1: Complain to Your Insurer, Then to IRDAI

The ombudsman will not accept a complaint until the insurer has had a chance to fix the problem. Start here:

  • Write to the insurer's grievance cell: Use email, the insurer's website or a branch visit, and keep the complaint reference number.

  • Escalate to IRDAI if needed: IRDAI has grievance redressal portal, Bima Bharosa, replaced the earlier Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS). You can register a complaint, receive a token number and track its status there.

  • Call or email if you prefer: The IRDAI toll-free number for complaints is 155255 or 1800 4254 732, and the email is complaints@irdai.gov.in. The call centre runs from 8 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday.

Step 2: File an Insurance Ombudsman Online Complaint

You can approach the Bima Lokpal if all of these apply:

  • You have already complained in writing to the insurer or broker.

  • The insurer rejected the complaint, replied in a way you do not accept, or did not reply within one month.

  • The compensation you seek is not more than ₹50 lakh, a limit raised from ₹30 lakh in November 2023

  • The same dispute is not already before a court or consumer commission.

What is the Time Limit to File an Ombudsman Complaint?

You must file within one year of the insurer's rejection, or within one year of the one-month reply window ending without an answer. To file the IRDA ombudsman online complaint:

  • Visit the CIO online complaint form and register with your mobile number and email.

  • Enter your policy details, the insurer's name and your complaint reference number.

  • Describe the issue and the relief you want, such as the claim amount.

  • Upload the policy document, claim papers, the insurer's rejection letter and your earlier correspondence.

  • Submit the form and note your complaint number.

You can also email or post the complaint, or visit the ombudsman office that covers your area. The list of insurance ombudsman offices gives each office's address, phone number and email. LIC policyholders use the same portal for an LIC ombudsman complaint online.

What Happens After Filing an Ombudsman Complaint?

The ombudsman first tries to settle the dispute through mediation. If both sides agree, it issues a recommendation, and the insurer must comply within 15 days of receiving your acceptance

If mediation fails, the ombudsman hears both sides and passes an award within three months of receiving all your documents. The award binds the insurer, which must comply within 30 days.

For an ombudsman complaint status check online, use the CIO tracking page with your complaint number.

How to Report Insurance Fraud to IRDAI Bima Bharosa?

Insurance fraud often starts with a phone call or message from someone pretending to be from IRDAI or an insurance company. Common tricks include claims that IRDAI is distributing bonuses to policyholders, advice to surrender an existing policy and buy a new one for higher returns, or being told that a maturity amount is due but you must buy a new policy to receive it.

Keep in mind that IRDAI does not sell any kind of insurance, does not invest the premium received by insurers, and does not announce any bonus for policyholders or insurers. Anyone who says otherwise is not genuine

Below mentioned are some things you can to report the insurance fraud

  • Don’t share details or pay anything. Stop the conversation and don’t share your policy, bank, KYC or OTP details.

  • Report it on Bima Bharosa. Use only the official portal, bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in. Fraudsters have also set up fake portals. IRDAI recently flagged igmsirdai.online as a fake website that claims to offer grievance registration services

  • Report it to the police or cybercrime cell. If you have lost money or shared sensitive information, file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or call the cybercrime helpline 1930.

  • Inform your insurer. Let your insurance company know so it can flag your policy and stop any unauthorised changes.

Insurance Ombudsman vs Consumer Court

For most personal claims under ₹50 lakh, the ombudsman is the faster and cheaper first choice.

Point Insurance Ombudsman Consumer Court
Cost Free Small filing fee, plus lawyer costs if you hire one
Claim limit Up to ₹50 lakh No upper limit across its three levels
Speed Award within 3 months of complete documents Often takes longer
Binding on The insurer only Both sides, subject to appeal

If the ombudsman rules against you, you can still approach a consumer court. You cannot run both cases on the same dispute at once.

Key Takeaways

  • Always complain to your insurer in writing first. You can go to the ombudsman only if it rejects your complaint or doesn’t reply within 30 days.

  • The Insurance Ombudsman (Bima Lokpal) is free and handles claims up to ₹50 lakh. You must file within one year.

  • IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa portal lets you register and track complaints against insurers.

  • The ombudsman’s award is binding on the insurer, which must comply within 30 days.

  • These complaint channels are part of the wider regulatory measures by IRDAI to protect policyholders.

FAQs

  • What is the IRDAI ombudsman?

Ans: “IRDAI ombudsman” is the common name for the Insurance Ombudsman, though it is not part of IRDAI. It is an independent forum set up under the Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017, and run by the Council for Insurance Ombudsmen. You can file an IRDAI ombudsman complaint online, free of charge, for claims up to ₹50 lakh.
  • How to file a complaint against an insurance company?

Ans: Start by writing to the insurer’s grievance cell. If it does not resolve the issue within 30 days, escalate to IRDAI through the Bima Bharosa portal, or file directly with the insurance ombudsman within one year.
  • How do I file an IRDAI complaint against a life insurance company?

Ans: Register an insurance regulatory authority complaint on the Bima Bharosa portal, call IRDAI’s toll-free number 155255 or 1800 4254 732, or email complaints@irdai.gov.in. IRDAI forwards the complaint to the insurer and lets you track its status with a token number.
  • What should I do if my insurance company is not responding to my claim complaint?

Ans: Wait one month from your written complaint. If there is still no reply, you can escalate on Bima Bharosa or file directly with the insurance ombudsman.
  • How do I file an ombudsman complaint for a term insurance claim?

Ans: The process is the same as above. Nominees and legal heirs of the policyholder can file, using the death certificate, claim papers and the insurer's rejection letter.
  • Can I complain about a free look cancellation?

Ans: Yes. If the insurer refuses or delays a refund after you cancel within the free look period, complain to the insurer first, then escalate to Bima Bharosa or the ombudsman.
