Documents Required for a Netherlands Student Visa

To get a Long-stay visa and later a Resident Permit in the Netherlands, you must fulfil the following requirements and provide documentation to support them.

Passport or Travel Document You must possess a valid passport or another accepted travel document.
Appendix Antecedents Certificate All applicants aged 12 and older must complete and submit an Appendix Antecedents Certificate, indicating any past criminal offenses.
TB Test Requirement Upon arrival in the Netherlands, you are required to undergo a tuberculosis (TB) test.
Proof of Enrollment Provide proof of registration or temporary registration at a recognised university or higher education institution (HBO).
Accredited Study Program Ensure the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) or the European Quality Assurance Register accredits your study program for Higher Education (EQAR).
Recognised Sponsor Your educational institution must be an approved sponsor with the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).
Full-Time Study Enrollment Enrollement in a full-time study program.
Income Requirements You must meet the financial requirements known as the "study norm," which reflects the living costs for Dutch students. This amount is updated annually on January 1st.
Currently, the following amounts are notified.
For university students: EUR 1217.96 per month
Secondary/Senior Secondary Education: EUR 1029.55 per month.
Proof of Sufficient Income Demonstrate sufficient funds through various means, including:
1. Personal bank accounts with funds.
2. Scholarships.
3. Company funds, or
4. Financial support from abroad or within the Netherlands.
5. Documents must be in Dutch, English, German, or French, or translated accordingly.
Academic Progress You need to achieve at least 50% of your study credits annually. Your institution will monitor and report your academic progress. 
Failure to make adequate progress without a valid reason may result in deregistration by the institution.

Types of Netherlands Student Visa 

If you wish to stay in the Netherlands and study at a Dutch university, you must apply for a Long-stay Visa (MVV). Once you reach the Netherlands, you need to collect your Residence Permit.

Applying for a Netherlands Student Visa

The process to apply for a Netherlands student visa is enumerated below. This Netherlands student visa application process is simple and quick.

  1. Prepare the Required Documents - Gather all necessary documents before scheduling your application submission. Ensure you have everything ready as per the Netherlands student visa requirements.

  2. Schedule an Appointment Online - Once your documents are in order, use the online appointment system to book a time to submit your application. If your approval letter indicates a specific location for submission (New Delhi, Bengaluru, or Mumbai), but you prefer a different one, you can choose another location without needing additional approval from the IND, embassy, or consulate.

  3. Track Your Application - After applying for your MVV in New Delhi, Bengaluru, or Mumbai, you will receive a tracking code. Use this code to monitor the status of your application online. An automatic email will notify you when your document is ready.

  4. Processing Time and Collection - In-person collection is not an option. Instead, arrange for courier delivery of your passport with the MVV. It is advisable to pre-book this service through DTDC or a similar courier. Processing at the embassy or consulates may take up to 10 working days. If you are in India, you can have your MVV sent to you by courier. Alternatively, you can authorise someone else to collect your passport on your behalf, but this requires prior consent from the embassy or consulate, which you should indicate when you apply.

    Visit the track & trace system online.
  2. Select Your Details
    Choose the country where you submitted your application and select your preferred language.
  3. Enter Tracking Information
    Input the tracking number provided when you submitted your application. This number can be found on the back of the card you received, which begins with three letters. The card will also include a link to the track & trace system.
  4. View Application Status
    Click ‘Submit’ to see the current Netherlands student visa status.
