What Is a PLI Bonus Calculator?

A PLI bonus calculator is an online tool used to find out roughly how much the cumulative bonus will be at any point during the time a PLI policyholder has not taken money back from the policy. PLI bonus has the structure of an annual reversionary bonus. A specific bonus rate is declared by PLI for every 1,000 of sum assured. The bonus rate of Postal Life Insurance varies by category, policy type, and policy term.

After the PLI bonus is declared, it becomes an amount the insured party can claim in addition to the sum assured, payable upon the policy's death or maturity. There are, of course, policy limitations to this, given the type of policy chosen. Using a Postal Life Insurance bonus calculator saves you the trouble of working this out manually and gives you a quick estimate instead, and you can check the bonus amounts in your life insurance policy from India Post.

How Is PLI Bonus Calculated?

The basic formula used to estimate the PLI bonus is:

PLI Bonus = (Sum Assured ÷ 1,000) × Bonus Rate × Number of Years

For example, assume a PLI policy has a sum assured of ₹5 lakh, a term of 20 years and an applicable bonus rate of ₹52 per ₹1,000 per year.

Estimated Bonus = (₹5,00,000 ÷ ₹1,000) × ₹52 × 20

= ₹5,20,000

Therefore, the estimated amount at maturity, before considering any other applicable benefits, would be:

₹5,00,000 + ₹5,20,000 = ₹10,20,000

This is an illustration. The actual benefit depends on the policy terms, applicable bonus declarations and the period for which the policy remains eligible for bonus.

How to Use a Postal Life Insurance Bonus Calculator?

Usually, a few details regarding the policy are enough to use the Postal Life Insurance bonus calculator. Here is what you should do:

Step 1: Provide the sum assured: Enter the value of the life insurance in your PLI policy

Step 2: Choose the type of policy: Select the type of PLI plan – Whole Life, Endowment or Anticipated Endowment

Step 3: Enter the policy term: Enter the number of years that will be needed for calculating the bonus

Step 4: Use the bonus percentage: Use the appropriate rate per ₹1,000 of sum assured

Step 5: Estimate the bonus amount: Calculate the accumulated bonus based on the above details

Step 6: Find out the estimated maturity amount: You will be able to take into consideration both the sum assured and the appropriate bonus amount.

Also, India Post's PLI Customer Portal offers a quote facility where people will be able to enter such details as the date of birth, product type, sum assured, etc.

What Factors Affect the PLI Bonus Calculation?

PLI bonus will depend on certain key factors of the policy that help decide the bonus built up during the policy tenure:

  • Sum Assured: The higher the sum assured, the higher the bonus.

  • Type of Policy: Different PLI policies have different bonus rates.

  • Bonus Rate: The Department of Posts will announce the applicable bonus rate for each policy.

  • Term of the Policy: A longer term means a higher bonus.

  • Future Announcements: Since rates can change in future years, the result of a Postal Life Insurance bonus calculator is only an estimate based on current or assumed future rates, not a guarantee.

Life Insurer Details

Does PLI Bonus Change Every Year?

Yes, the bonus rate of Postal Life Insurance may vary due to recent declarations by the Department of Posts. The rates for FY 2026-27 are ₹76, ₹52 and ₹48 per ₹1,000 for Whole Life Assurance, Endowment Assurance and Anticipated Endowment Assurance, respectively.

Is There a Terminal Bonus in PLI?

Yes, PLI offers a terminal bonus at the rate of ₹20 per ₹10,000 of sum assured up to ₹1,000. This provision shall be available in case of eligible Whole Life Assurance and Endowment Assurance plans with a duration of 20 years or above.

What Is the Difference Between PLI Bonus and Sum Assured?

The insured amount is the sum assured, while the bonus is the extra amount paid by the Postal Department. Bonus is an additional sum given by the Department, and it is calculated separately. This can be the total amount at death or at maturity, depending on the policy's terms.

Why Should You Use a PLI Bonus Calculator?

The Postal Life Insurance bonus calculator is a handy tool to help you understand the bonus you might receive. It can definitely help you when you need to make a decision based on a comparison of the bonus amounts you may get under different policy terms.

PLI Bonus calculator offers you these benefits:

  • Let you approximate the bonus accrued over a policy period.

  • Help you determine the effect of the bonus rate on the maturity amount you will receive.

  • Give you the ability to calculate the bonus without having to do the calculation manually several times.

  • Let you compare the estimated bonuses for different levels of sum assured.

  • Provide you with a starting point for the total benefit of the policy.

  • The calculation produced by the calculator should not be used as the final basis for a claim or a quotation of the maturity amount.

Summing Up

The PLI bonus calculator is an easy way of getting a forecast of the bonus that could be accumulating on a Postal Life Insurance policy. It mainly takes into account the sum assured, the applicable bonus rate and the eligible policy period. For FY 2026-27, the PLI bonus rates are 76, 52 and 48 per 1,000 for Whole Life, Endowment and Anticipated Endowment policies, respectively. Since the bonus rate of Postal Life Insurance may vary per future declarations, the calculator is not able to give a reliable forecast of the exact maturity amount, so it's best to take the calculator result just as a forecast.

FAQ's

  • How is the PLI bonus calculated?

PLI bonus is determined based on the bonus rate applicable for every 1,000 of Sum Assured. Get the Product of Sum Assured and rate. Next, multiply the obtained value by the applicable policy period.
  • What is the PLI bonus rate for 2026?

PLI bonus rates for the financial year 2026-27 differ per scheme type. Whole life and Convertible whole life have a rate of 76 per 1,000; at the same time, Endowment and Joint Life schemes have 52 per 1,000.
  • Is the PLI bonus paid out every year in cash?

No. The bonus accrues each year based on the declared rate, but it isn't paid to you annually. It builds up over the policy term and is paid out as a lump sum, along with the sum assured, only at maturity or on the policyholder's death.
  • Does Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) have the same bonus rate as regular PLI?

No. They're declared separately, and RPLI rates are typically lower. Based on the same India Post gazette notification I checked, RPLI rates (effective from the same period) were ₹60 per ₹1,000 for Whole Life, ₹48 for Endowment, and ₹45 for Anticipated Endowment — a few rupees lower than the regular PLI rates on each category. If you're using a bonus calculator, make sure you're selecting PLI or RPLI correctly, since using the wrong one will overstate or understate your estimate.
  • Who is eligible to buy a PLI policy, and does that affect the bonus calculator?

PLI isn't open to the general public the way LIC is. It’s eligibility is generally restricted to central and state government employees, defence and paramilitary personnel, PSU employees, bank employees, and certain approved professional categories. This doesn't change how the bonus calculator works, but it's worth knowing before you spend time estimating a bonus for a policy you may not actually be eligible to buy.
  • Does the PLI bonus calculator automatically include the terminal bonus?

Not usually. Most basic calculators (and the formula shown above) estimate only the annual reversionary bonus. The terminal bonus — ₹20 per ₹10,000 of sum assured, capped at ₹1,000 — applies separately, only on eligible Whole Life and Endowment policies with a 20-year-plus term, so you may need to add this manually to get a complete maturity estimate.
  • Is there a minimum policy duration before the bonus starts building up?

Bonus generally starts accruing from an early policy year, but for most PLI plans, this requires the policy to have been in force and running for the applicable period — check your specific plan's terms, since this can vary slightly by policy type (Whole Life, Endowment, Anticipated Endowment, etc.).
  • Can I use a PLI bonus calculator to compare Whole Life vs. Endowment Assurance?

Yes, since Whole Life currently carries a higher bonus rate (₹76 per ₹1,000) than Endowment Assurance (₹52 per ₹1,000), running the same sum assured and term through the calculator for both plan types is a quick way to see the bonus difference, though remember these two plan types also differ in maturity age, payout structure, and purpose, not just the rate.
