PLI vs NPS for Government Employees

Government employees often come across the Postal Life Insurance (PLI) scheme and the National Pension Scheme (NPS) when planning for their future. But the two schemes have different utilities. PLI is a life insurance scheme in which the sum assured and bonuses under eligible plans are paid to the insured. NPS, conversely, is an investment scheme designed for retirement planning.

What Is the Difference Between PLI and NPS?

NPS and PLI are not alternatives for each other, as both serve different functions.

The Postal Life Insurance scheme is also open to eligible employees, such as Central and State Government Employees, Employees of Defence and Para-Military Services, Employees of PSUs, Employees of Banks, Employees of Educational Institutions, etc. Through this scheme, you can acquire the life insurance products, namely The Whole Life Assurance, The Endowment Assurance, The Convertible Whole Life Assurance and The Anticipated Endowment Assurance.

Accordingly, the premium will vary based on the PLI scheme opted for and the sum assured, with accrued bonuses paid at policy maturity or, in the event of the policyholder’s death, to the nominee/legal heirs. PLI is also available for a wide range of individuals through Rural Postal Life Insurance policies. The RPLI schemes vary in premium and benefits depending upon the scheme, sum assured, entry age, policy term, etc., whereas PLI schemes are available largely to a specified group of employees and a class of professionals.

NPS, on the contrary, is intended to build a retirement corpus/pension. In case of NPS for Central Government employees, the employee is required to contribute 10% of Basic Pay + DA, while the Government contributes 14% of Basic Pay + DA to the Tier I account.

Thus, while PLI aims at life insurance, NPS is aimed at building a corpus for retirement/pension.
