How to Change Nominees in PLI?

The person designated by the owner of a policy of the Postal Life Insurance (PLI) to receive the benefits of the insurance policy is called a nominee. Policyholders can change nominees based on their needs and circumstances. Therefore, you can easily replace the nominee and issue an updated nomination process through the official policy of India Post.

What Is the PLI Nomination Change?

PLI nomination change implies that the details of a nominee registered with the Postal Life Insurance need to be changed. In order for a policyholder to change the nominee, they have to submit the nomination form and provide the required documents.

The official PLI nomination form allows details of up to three nominees to be provided. It records information such as the nominee’s name, relationship with the policyholder, share percentage, gender, date of birth, age, address, phone number and email ID. If a nominee is a minor, the form also requires details of an appointee who can act on the minor nominee’s behalf. The process of nominee updation is similar for Postal Life Insurance and Rural Postal Life Insurance Policies. India Post adopts a consolidated "Request for Registration/Change of Nomination" form applicable for both PLI and RPLI since both life insurance policies are regulated under Section 39 of the Insurance Act of 1938.

When Can You Change the Nominee in a PLI Policy?

A change of nomination might be obligatory if any circumstances change related to the policyholder as an individual or as a member of a family. For instance, a policyholder can be willing to replace the present nominee, add one more member of the family to the nominee list or rectify some incorrect information in the nominee documents.

India Post lists change of nomination as one of the policy servicing requests available to PLI/RPLI customers. The department’s service standards specify a time limit of 10 days for settling a change-of-nomination request after receiving the request.

It is advisable to review the nomination whenever there is a significant change in family circumstances so that the policy records continue to reflect the policyholder’s wishes.

Where to Submit the PLI Nomination Change Form?

The nomination change request can be submitted through the postal/PLI servicing channel. India Post provides PLI services through its Post Offices and PLI Customer Service Centres. The department also states that policy servicing requests, including change of nomination, are handled within the prescribed service standard after receipt of the request.

For a request submitted at a Post Office, ensure that the form is complete and that all required supporting documents are available. Carry original documents wherever verification is required.

What to Consider Before Submitting a Nominee Change Request?

Before submitting your nomination change request, double-check everything so you do not end up having to correct mistakes. Look at the following facts:

  • Policy information: Because you have to provide your life insurance policy number, make sure it is correct.

  • Nominee information: Ensure your nominee’s name, relation, date of birth and address are verified so there are no doubts.

  • Equity percentage: Proper percentages written for all nominees must be verified.

  • Minor nominee: You must check the details of the nominee if he/she is a minor.

  • MWPA policies: The nomination rules in the PLI form are not applicable to policies that are subject to the Married Women’s Property Act of 1874.

What Happens After PLI Nomination Change?

Once the request is received, the concerned office processes the nomination change after checking the submitted information and documents. India Post’s published service standard provides 10 days for the settlement of a change-of-nomination request from the date of receiving the request.

Policyholders are expected to keep the records of their acknowledgement once the changes have been made and to ensure that the updated nomination has been correctly recorded. Keeping the nomination details up to date ensures that the process of claiming the funds becomes easier once they become due.

Summing Up

PLI nomination check means the financial benefits are going into the correct hands. If any of the nominee's personal details have undergone a change, the nominee should fill in and submit the nomination revision application form. After the change, the nominee must verify from the records that their changes have been incorporated.
