Types of Organ Donations

  • Living Donation: A living person can donate specific organs or parts of organs, such as a single kidney or a portion of their liver, to a family member, friend, or sometimes an anonymous recipient.

  • Deceased Donation: This occurs after a person has been declared brain-dead or has passed away from circulatory death. It allows for the donation of multiple vital organs (like the heart, lungs, and pancreas)

  • Tissue Donation: Even after a natural death, tissues such as corneas, skin, heart valves, and bones can be donated to heal or restore function for others.

How to Become An Organ Donor?

Becoming an organ donor in India is a free and voluntary act and can be done online in a few steps.

Step 1: Visit the NOTTO or the Ayushman Bharat Organ Donation portal and verify your Aadhaar through the OTP.

Step 2: Fill out the Pledge form by entering your details and selecting the organs you want to donate.

Step 3: Sign electronically, submit, and download your Donor Card online.

Note: Donors may change or cancel their pledge at any time.

Also, people who want to donate their organs need to talk briefly with their family because they need their consent.

How Do I Become A Living Organ Donor?

You must be 18+ and in good health, both physically and mentally, to be a living organ donor. You should also have no medical history of diseases such as cancer or diabetes.

Here is a process you need to follow to make a living organ donation.

  • Step 1: Choose the type of organ donation

  • Step 2: Contact a transplant center

  • Step 3: Complete medical tests to conform you are fit for an organ donation

  • Step 4: After the approval the surgery is performed

How Does The Organ Transplant Process Work?

  • The donor's consent is confirmed if they are alive at the moment, and if the organ was donated from a deceased individual, the consent is given beforehand.

  • Following this, medical tests are conducted to ensure that the organs are in a stable and suitable condition for a transplant.

  • Next, the doctors match the organ donor's organs with the patients based on blood type and medical compatibility.

  • The organ retrieval takes place as a specialised team of surgeons carefully removes and preserves the donated organs for transplantation.

  • Lastly, the transplant surgery takes place, and the recipient undergoes a surgery to receive the donated organ. This process takes place quickly to ensure that the organ remains functional.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from an Organ Transplant Surgery?

Recovering from an organ transplant can take up to 6 months if you are a living donor or an organ receiver. If you want to obtain a complete recovery and get proper medical treatment in case any difficulties emerge, the doctors recommend that you remain in the hospital for a few weeks.

The Financial Risk for Living Donor’s

Recovery involves both physical and financial aspects. A living donor might not work for months, but medical bills continue to arrive. Many health policies fail to cover donor expenses completely, putting families at risk. This is where a term insurance plan is essential; it offers a financial safety net when life takes an unexpected turn.

Note: You can use a term insurance calculator to calculate the premium amounts of the plan.

A Critical Illness Rider

A term plan with a Critical Illness rider provides a lump sum payment if you or the beneficiary is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition that necessitates an organ transplant. This payout addresses hospital bills, lost income, and recovery costs, allowing you to concentrate on healing rather than finances. It is advised to take a life insurance plan with a critical illness rider, as it gives additional financial safety.

Note: Organ transplant cost is not included in the base term plan. But you can easily and affordably fill that gap with a Critical Illness Rider.

Varun Agarwal IRDAI Certified Term Insurance Expert with 10+ Years of Experience

Varun has spent years in the insurance space, but what drives him isn't policies or premiums — it's the conversations he's had with real people. A young father in Pune wondering if his salary is enough. A newly married couple in Jaipur putting off "the insurance talk" for later. A mother in Chennai who never knew her husband was underinsured until it was too late.
These stories stay with him. As Head of Term Insurance at Policybazaar, Varun knows the numbers well — 52.4% of Indians are aware of term insurance, yet only 9.6% own it. And 87% of families don't realise they're leaving their loved ones with far less protection than they actually need. But behind every statistic, he sees a family that just needed someone to sit with them, explain it simply, and help them take that one step. That's exactly what Policybazaar's term insurance is built to do. In his words, "Most people aren't avoiding protection — they're just waiting for someone to make it easy. That's what we're here for."
