Steps to Apply for a Student Passport in India

For any trip abroad, there is a list of essential documents without which you cant make that journey. However, a student passport is the primary document for any student who plans to study in another country. The procedure is not too different from a regular Indian passport application. If youre a student planning to travel abroad, you can apply for a passport for students by following these steps:

  1. Step 1

    Go to the official website Passport Seva to start your application

  2. Step 2

    Register yourself and make an application by following the directions shared.

  3. Step 3

    Pick an appointment for a passport at the nearby passport seva kendra. Make sure to book a convenient slot. Arrange all the important documents.

  4. Step 4

    Visit the PSK on the scheduled date and submit all the documents and biometrics for verification.

  5. Step 5

    After everything, collect the acknowledgement receipt and track your passport application to know the exact status.

Along with this, you will also need a police verification report (PVR) only, after which the passport will be issued. To get a passport police verification done, you can apply for a PVR through the passport seva portal. However, the passport authorities notify the concerned police station to carry out the police verification.

Documents for Indian Passport for Students

Indian applicants for student passports must provide address and age proof. The following documents will work for the Indian student passport procedure:

For Proof of Address

  • Birth certificate
  • Telephone bill
  • Copy of parents passport (first and last page) if the student is a minor
  • Voter ID card
  • Aadhar card
  • Passbook of active bank account
  • Copy of the latest utility bill (water or electricity bill)
  • Rent agreement of the current residence

For Age Proof

  • Birth certificate
  • High school certificate/ secondary school leaving certificate issued by a recognised educational institute/ board.
  • Copy of the ID card issued by a recognised educational institute where the student is currently studying
  • A Bonafide certificate that has been issued by the students college or university

Indian Passport for Students: Fee and Payment Details

For fresh student passports, the applicant must pay INR 1,500. This payment must be made online at the time of booking a passport appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra. Some of the payment modes for student passport fees are given below:

  • SBI challan
  • Internet banking
  • Credit card
  • Debit card

Additionally, you can also generate an online challan by visiting the nearest SBI branch and paying for it.

Eligibility for Student Passport in India

Any Indian student who wishes to pursue higher education from another country can apply for an Indian student passport given that they meet the following criteria:

For Proof of Address

  • Students above 18 years must self-attest their documents
  • In case the applicant is a minor below 18 years of age, their parents must attest their documents
  • For minors, the current address proof in the name of their parents will also be accepted.
  • Minors are eligible for non-ECR category until they reach the age of 18.

Please note that parental consent is required for all minor passport applicants, including Indian student passport applicants.

Other than passport eligibility, students planning to go abroad for school, college or research work must also meet the following criteria:

  • They must have secured admission at an accredited educational institute in the country they plan to pursue studies in
  • They must have a valid Indian passport
  • They must have a valid student visa for the country they plan to study in
  • They must fulfil all requirements of that university/country, such as having sufficient funds, having a student travel health insurance, eMedical information sheet, etc.

Please note that the requirements may vary from university to university, as well as the country.

Time Taken to Get a Student Passport in India

Normal passport procedures can take anywhere from 25 days to 40 days. To avoid any delays, it is advisable to apply for a student passport early. However, there is also the option to apply for a tatkaal passport for students. In most cases, the passport will be issued within 1-3 days of visiting the passport seva kendra.

For students over 18 years, the passport validity is for ten years from the date of issue. You can only renew the passport a year before its expiration.
