Documents Required for an Indian Passport: Your Comprehensive Checklist
A passport is not just a travel document, it is the only acceptable proof of your identity and citizenship in India. Whether you are applying for a new passport, getting a reissue, or applying passport for a child, you need to know the exact requirements. Ensuring you have all the documents is the most important step for a smooth and timely passport application process.

What are the Documents Needed for Indian Passport?
The list of documents for getting a passport is divided into three main categories:
- Proof of Address (PoA)
- Proof of Date of Birth (PoDB)
- and Proof of Identity (PoI)
You need to provide one document for each of these identity requirements at the PSK. You must carry original documents along with one set of self-attested photocopies to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) for verification.
Documents for a Fresh Adult Passport Application
If you're starting a new passport application, you must provide at least one valid document for each of the following categories:

Proof of Identity
While most of the documents above (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, Driving Licence) serve as identity proof, ensuring they are valid and in the correct name is crucial.
Other Mandatory Requirements
Other than providing official proofs, you must have the following documents ready for your passport application procedure:
- Photos: Two recent passport-sized colour photographs (2-inch x 2-inch) against a plain white background. The photos should be clear, taken within the last six months, and the applicant should have a neutral expression without glasses.
- Printed Passport Application Form: The completed online passport application form must be printed and signed.
- Annexures/Affidavits: Depending on your specific case (e.g., if you are a government employee, a minor, or have a name change), you may need to submit supporting affidavits or annexures (e.g., Annexure 'E').
Passport Document Requirements for Special Situations
Not all applicants have a similar situation, hence the document requirements can vary based on their profile. Depending on their situation and the nature of the service requested, here are some special scenarios and the documents required:
Passport for Minors (Under 18 Years)
A minor in India is anyone under 18 years or the legal age. A minor's passport is valid for five years or until they turn 18, whichever is earlier. These are the documents required for a minor applicant's passport:
- Minor's Birth Certificate for proof of date of birth
- Proof of address in the name of the parent(s)
- Parents' Passport Copies (Original and self-attested copies of both parents' passports, if applicable)
- Annexure 'D': A declaration of consent signed by both parents or legal guardians. Both parents must generally be present at the PSK.
Passport Re-issue (Renewal, Change of Details, Lost/Damaged)
These are the documents required for re-issuing a passport due to expiry, theft, exhaustion of pages, or changes in personal particulars (e.g., name, address, marital status):
- Original Old Passport (Even if expired, damaged). In case your passport was lost/stolen, then you must provide a Police Report/FIR and an affidavit detailing the incident.
- Self-attested Copies of the first two and last two pages of the old passport, including the ECR/Non-ECR page.
- Specific Proof for Change: Marriage Certificate (for spouse name addition/name change post-marriage) or Divorce Decree (for marital status change).
Tatkaal Passport Service
For urgent requirements, you can opt for the Tatkaal service which allows for faster passport processing. You must provide all the standard documents listed above, along with a few additional proofs or compliance requirements, which may include:
- Annexure 'E'.
- Additional proofs as specified on the Passport Seva portal for Tatkaal applications.
- The Tatkaal application process may involve post-police verification.
Tips for a Smooth Passport Application Process
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, has streamlined the passport application process. To guarantee a hassle-free experience, always:
- Use the official website's document advisor on the Passport Seva website. It will provide a precise list tailored to your specific case (e.g., fresh, reissue, minor, Tatkaal, etc.).
- Ensure all names and details on the documents match the information provided in your application form.
- Carry all original documents along with their self-attested photocopies to your scheduled appointment.
Over to You,
Your passport is the most important document for any journey abroad. Even before leaving India, you need a valid Indian passport to make necessary flight and hotel bookings. For this, you must ensure that your passport is in good condition, has sufficient validity and in case you don't have a passport, then you should apply for one accordingly. Finally, once you are done with the bookings and formalities, don't forget to buy travel insurance for your trip. It offers a lot of protection in case of emergencies abroad, including theft or loss of a passport abroad. While it is important to keep your passport with you safe at all times, in case it is stolen or damaged, your travel insurance policy can help you cover the expenses related to issuing a new one in India.
