    The Olympic Games is organised by a different host city every four years alternating between the winter and summer sports after every two years. Tokyo is the host for the summer sports Olympic Games this year where 33 competitions and 339 events will be held across 21 venues. This is the second time that Tokyo is hosting the Olympic Games after the Summer 1964 Summer Olympics.

    Once the Olympics are over, the Paralympic Games will be held at the same venues in Tokyo from 24 August to 5 September 2021.

    Tokyo 2020 Olympics

    The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will occur in two zones - the Heritage Zone and the Tokyo bay Zone. The Heritage Zone is the revamped version of the 1964 Summer Olympics. On the other hand, the Tokyo Bay Zone is the modern version that features innovative urban development and symbolizes Tokyo’s exciting future. Both the zones are oval-shaped that together form an infinity symbol and intersect at the Athlete’s Village.

    In Tokyo 2020, four new sports are being introduced. The Surfing competition will be held at Shidashita Beach and will have a window of 16 days for optimal waves. The Skateboarding will be held for both men and women with street and park competitions. The Karate competition, which is a native to Japan, will be held in kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) disciplines. Similarly, the Sport Climbing competition will be held in bouldering, speed climbing and lead climbing disciplines. Besides, Baseball and Softball for men and women respectively will also make a comeback in Tokyo 2020 first time since 2008.

    The Paralympic Games, which will be held after the Olympics are over, will see a debut of Taekwondo and Badminton this year.

    Rescheduling of Tokyo 2020 due to COVID-19 Pandemic

    The 2020 Summer Olympics were originally scheduled to be held from 24 July to August 2020.  However, the year 2020 started with the COVID-19 pandemic bringing the whole world to a standstill. Considering the severity of the pandemic, the International Olympic Committee announced the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to July 2021. This was the first time in the history of the Olympics that the Games were postponed. However, the postponed Games are still officially and colloquially referred to as the ‘Tokyo 2020’.

    Moreover, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has decided to honour all tickets purchased for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics when they are held in 2021. Those visitors who will not be able to attend the Games in 2021 will have the ticket amount reimbursed.
