Why do you require Individual Travel Insurance?

Individual Travel Insurance provides you medical, financial and other assistance in case of an eventuality while travelling within the native land or internationally. Regardless of the purpose you are travelling for, travel insurance keeps you secure from unfortunate events such as missed of delayed flights, loss of passport, loss or delay in checked-in baggage, a medical emergency, or an accident while you are on a trip. It also gives you a peace of mind knowing that you have a support in case of any kind of emergencies that arise during your travel.

What does the Individual Travel Insurance cover?

Covered in policy

Insurance market has numerous insurance companies that offer an array of travel insurance plans. The benefits and covers you get under these plans vary from insurer to insurer. However, on a generic basis, most of the travel insurance policies provide some basic covers such as medical cover, loss of baggage cover and cancellation cover. You might also get a few more covers in comprehensive plans such as, cover for valuables and holiday money, personal accident / liability cover, legal expenses cover and flight delay cover.

Medical cover

This cover protects you against expenses incurred by you or your family members in case of a medical emergency arising out of sudden illness, death, or injury, while travelling abroad. Expenses made for emergency evacuation to India in case of a medical issue are also covered by the insurer.

Expenses incurred for transporting the mortal remains of the insured back to his home or burial expenses abroad in case of an untimely death; anesthetic dental surgery due to an injury; injury to any body part due to accident; and compensation for permanent disablement or death while travelling as a passenger in the common carrier are all covered under this insurance.

Personal liability

Personal liability cover provides coverage against the compensation you pay to settle any loss caused to a third party. This cover is especially beneficial if you are travelling with kids.

Cancellation covers

Cancellation cover provides coverage against the costs of flights and hotel bookings in case your trip gets cancelled. However, you should be extra thoughtful while deciding the cover amount. The amount should be sufficient enough to easily cover all your expenses, including the cost of prepaid excursions.

Baggage and personal possessions cover

This covers the cost of your lost or damaged baggage in transit. However while deciding the amount of this cover you should also consider the cost of your valuables inside the baggage, such as your camera or laptop and factor this into the cover level you decide upon.

Lost passport cover

This covers the total cost incurred in obtaining a new or a duplicate passport in case you lose your passport or it gets stolen.

You can customize and make your policy cover broader by paying a little additional premium and opting for any of the following cover:

  • Opting for Sports cover can provide coverage for adventurous and risky activities like skiing, skydiving, paragliding, ski run walking, and snowboarding. The cover also includes the expenses incurred due to injury and damaged or stolen equipment used for the activity.

  • Opting for Excess waiver cover can save you from paying any part of any claims that you make. However, the waiver will not be applicable in case of an injury happening as a result of voluntary manual work.

  • Opting for the 60 day cover can be the most advantageous option as it extends the period of your cover. Under this you can be covered for your trips up to 60 days or more (depending on the insurer).

Not Covered in policy

Every insurance policy has certain limitations to it and so does an individual travel insurance policy. Here is a list of exclusion under individual travel insurance:

Pre-existing Medical Ailment

Individual travel insurance policy does not provide coverage against a pre-existing medical ailment, unless the insured is in a serious condition or is suffering a life threatening disease.

Expenses incurred in any of the following situation will not be covered:
  • If the insured attempts to or commits suicide or in case of self inflicted illness or injuries
  • If the insured is suffering any kind of mental disorder
  • If the insured id suffering from depression, anxiety or stress
  • If the insured is suffering from a venereal disease
  • If it is a case of alcohol or drug abuse
  • If the insured has HIV/AIDS
Any Expenses incurred in any of the following situations will not be covered:
  • If you are travelling against the advice of your doctor or physician
  • If you are already taking a specified medical treatment
  • If you are travelling abroad for the treatment of a pre-existing medical problem
  • If you are suffering from a terminal disease
Passport Cover

Passport cover will not be valid if the theft, damage or loss of passport happens due to your carelessness or negligence, or if you have not reported the theft or loss to the local police authorities.

Partial Damage

No coverage will be provided in case of partial damage or loss of checked-in baggage (only complete loss or damage is covered).

War in the Country

Any circumstances arising out of nuclear threat or war in the country you are travelling to, will not be covered under the plan.
