Emergency Cash Benefit vs. Emergency Financial Assistance
A lot of customers think that emergency cash benefit and financial emergency assistance are one and the same. Some people even use these terms interchangeably, but both represent different 'modes' of support offered by travel insurance policies.
Here is a breakdown of the key differences between financial emergency assistance and emergency cash benefit:
| Features | Emergency Cash Benefit/Advance | Emergency Financial Assistance |
| Meaning | A fixed payout or an allowance given by the insurer. | A facilitation service where your insurer helps you get emergency funds. |
| Source | The money is paid by the insurer. | The money is provided by your friends/family back home. |
| How it Works | You will get a fixed amount to cover essentials (food, transport, etc.) | The insurer coordinates with its global network to wire you money or arrange cash. |
| Repayment | Usually no need to repay since it's a claim payout. | Must be repaid if the money wired belongs to friends or family. |
| When is it applicable? | In cases of crimes such as pickpocketing, theft, or mugging. | In case of a major event where you lose everything (baggage theft/loss) |
Things to Remember
You must understand a few nuances related to both these benefits:
You need to provide a FIR or a Police report to get both the benefits.
Both have a time limit (usually 24 hours) within which you must report the incident causing the loss of funds.
In case of cash assistance or facilitation, your insurer may deduct service charges or wire transfer fees from the total amount delivered to you
You can benefit from an event only once; you can't claim cash benefits or assistance again if you have exhausted your funds for the remainder of your trip.
How to Claim the Emergency Cash Benefit?
You must follow these steps to raise a claim under the emergency cash benefit/assistance:
-
Step 1
File a police report immediately. It must state that a theft or robbery occurred.
-
Step 2
Inform your insurer by contacting the international assistance number listed on your policy.
-
Step 3
Provide proof of funds that you lost. You can't claim assistance without proving you had those funds. You can use bank statements, currency exchange receipts or ATM withdrawal slips.
-
Step 4
Your insurer's TPA (Third-party Administrator) will verify the police report and proceed with arranging cash (either as a claim payout or through wire transfer of funds provided by your family back home).

What is Covered or Not Covered under Emergency Financial Assistance
When Can You Get Emergency Financial Assistance?
No travel insurance company in India offers emergency cash for general spending. Only if you are in a genuine situation which is covered by your policy can this benefit be used. Here are some common scenarios where you can get these benefits:
Theft/Robbery of Travel Funds
A situation where your wallet, purse or travel pouch is stolen. Many international travel insurance policies cover you in the event of burglary, robbery, theft, or dacoity. However, you must be able to prove that the crime occurred.
Loss of Baggage
This happens if your airline loses your checked-in baggage, which contains your cards and backup cash. Some insurers offer cash assistance up to a certain amount, but you can claim it only after providing a Property Irregularity Report or PIR.
Loss of Travel Documents
If your passport or other travel documents are also lost or stolen along with your money abroad, your insurer will help you cover the necessary expenses. The benefit can cover costs for obtaining an emergency travel document and reissuing the passport. Many insurers will also cover transport and emergency accommodation costs because of your change in plans.
What Does Financial Emergency Assistance Not Cover?
To avoid disappointment later, it is important to understand the scenarios where this benefit will not be available:
Situations where you just 'lose' your wallet or purse, such as forgetting it in a taxi or can't remember where you left it. You won't be covered for the loss unless there is an element of theft or force that can prove it.
You can't claim cash assistance for money that you lost because of changes in exchange rates.
'Short-changing' by a vendor is not covered. Similarly, if you lost cash because of exchange errors at a counter, you won't be covered.
Emergency Financial Assistance Under Travel Insurance: FAQs
-
Q. Is the emergency cash advance a payout benefit or a loan?
Ans: This depends on your travel insurance policy. If it's a cash benefit, then you don’t need to repay this amount (in case of a robbery or theft). However, if your policy provides emergency financial assistance, it means that your insurer will only facilitate the transfer of funds from your family/relations in India to you abroad. -
Q. Can I get emergency financial assistance if I run out of money?
Ans: No, overspending or mismanagement of funds is not a valid reason to get this benefit. This also includes currency fluctuations and personal spending. -
Q. If I lose my wallet abroad at 2:00 AM, what should I do?
Ans: As soon as you discover the loss, you must report it to the local police. This should be done within 24 hours. If you don’t report the police and your insurer within the stipulated time, your emergency cash claim will be denied. -
Q. Will the insurer send someone to give me the cash?
Ans: No, you won’t be delivered the emergency cash physically unless it’s unavoidable. In most cases, your travel insurance company’s international assistance partner will arrange cash at a local bank branch. You can pick it up from there. -
Q. Can I claim the emergency cash benefit if my money was stolen from my hotel room?
Ans: Yes. But you must provide proof of burglary. You should also check that there was no negligence on your part, such as leaving the room unlocked or carelessly leaving the keys behind. -
Q. Will the insurer ask me to provide receipts for what I spend the emergency cash on?
Ans: Usually, you don’t need to show receipts for how or where you utilise the emergency cash. This is often a fixed sum provided to you for essentials. However, you need to provide proof of the original loss, such as ATM receipts or bank statements, if your wallet, cards, or belongings were stolen.
