What is the Battery Protect Cover?

The battery protect cover is an optional add-on for electric and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) insurance that covers losses or damage to the EV's battery, which can cost up to 40–50% of the vehicle's total value. It helps you pay the expenses for the repair or replacement of the battery pack, battery management system (BMS), charging equipment, and the electric motor due to damage from water ingress (water entering the battery), power surges, and short circuits.

However, in the event of an accident, the battery protection cover will pay only if there is clear damage to the underside of the EV that has affected the battery and its related components. Some insurers may also include labour charges under this add-on. You can opt for the battery protect add-on with electric car insurance under a comprehensive or own-damage plan for an additional premium amount.Read more

    Battery Protect Cover

Coverage Under the Battery Protect Add-on

    What is Covered in Policy
    • Unexpected power surge while charging the battery

    • Any consequential damage to the battery or its related parts due to short-circuiting while mounting or dismounting the charger

    • Loss or damage from water ingress or moisture build-up due to submergence in water

    • Sudden, unclear, & uncontrolled overheating of the battery resulting in explosion, fire, or smoke coming out of it or the related parts

    • Mechanical shock to the battery and related parts from an accidental collision or impact

    • The labour charges during the removal, refitting, or diagnostics of the battery pack

What is Not Covered in Policy
    • Gradual degradation of the EV battery health, normal wear and tear, or a reduction in driving range over time

    • If the EV service or repair is done at an unauthorised garage or service centre

    • Any damage to the insured EV’s battery due to manufacturing defects (usually covered under the manufacturer's warranty)

    • Damages to your electric vehicle battery from improper charging practices or using unauthorised chargers

    • Any claim due to battery swapping unless done at OEM-authorised or Government-approved stations

    • Losses incurred when violating vehicle operating guidelines, such as racing or rallying

    • Any claim where the battery is already dead due to untimely charging or any other purpose

Note: Besides these, there are other motor insurance exclusions depending on the insurer. It is best to go through the insurer’s terms before buying the policy.

Who Should Opt for the Battery Protect Cover?

When selecting car insurance for your electric vehicle, you should consider the battery protect add-on cover if you meet any of the following conditions:

    • Those who commute daily and are exposed to various unforeseen road risks
    • Individuals living in areas prone to heavy rainfall or waterlogging
    • New EV owners who want peace of mind against the high battery replacement costs

How to Claim Under the Battery Protect Insurance?

Here’s how to raise a claim under the battery protect cover in your electric car insurance:

    • Immediately after the incident, inform your insurer about the damages.
    • Provide the documents, photographs of your damaged EV and battery, and a thorough description of the incident to your insurer.
    • The insurer will then assign a surveyor to inspect damages to your EV.
    • Upon claim approval, you can choose between a cashless claim at an authorised network garage or a reimbursement claim at any garage.
    • For cashless claims, the insurer pays the garage directly; for reimbursements, you need to pay upfront, and your insurer refunds you later.

Battery Protect Cover in Electric Car Insurance - FAQs

    • Is the battery insurance cover worth it for an electric car?

Yes, it offers comprehensive coverage for the highly valuable battery pack of the electric car, which costs nearly half the EV’s total price.
    • How much does the battery insurance cost?

The cost of the battery protect cover depends on the EV's make & model, battery capacity, IDV, vehicle registration location, and claim history.
    • How many claims can I make under the battery protect add-on?

Most insurers allow you to make a maximum of two claims under the battery protect add-on in a year (which may vary by policy's terms). After that, your main policy coverage continues without this add-on.
    • Can the battery protection cover be bought with third-party insurance?

The battery protection cover can't be clubbed with third-party insurance. You can only opt for the battery protector add-on with a comprehensive or standalone own-damage electric car insurance plan for an extra premium.
    • If my battery gets damaged due to improper charging, will it be covered?

Damages due to the use of unauthorised chargers or consistently ignoring operating guidelines are not covered under your electric car insurance, even with the battery protect add-on.
    • How can I buy a battery protector for electric car insurance?

You can easily purchase the battery protection cover while buying or renewing comprehensive or own-damage electric car insurance online or offline.
