Importance of Having a Duplicate Insurance Copy for Your Car

Since vehicle insurance is mandatory as per the Motor Laws in India, you can’t afford to lose it as it may lead to legal consequences. Besides, car insurance provides financial protection against the expenses arising out of accidental damages, theft or other related perils. Hence, keeping the car policy active and handy is important. Therefore, you must be aware of the process of obtaining a duplicate copy of your car insurance policy in case it gets lost or stolen.

How to Get a Duplicate Car Insurance Copy?

There are two ways of obtaining a duplicate copy of your car insurance papers - online and offline. The online process involves getting a duplicate insurance copy pdf download by vehicle number while the offline process involves obtaining its hard copy. Both processes are extremely easy. Since the offline process was being used traditionally, let’s talk about it first.

Here are the steps to obtain a duplicate insurance copy of your four-wheeler via offline mode:

Step 1: Notify Your Car Insurance Provider

The first thing that you need to do is to inform your motor insurance company about the loss of your car insurance policy document. Try to notify your insurer as soon as possible so that your insurance company can commence the process of issuing the duplicate four-wheeler policy document at the earliest.

You can inform your insurer by calling them on their claim assistance number or toll-free number. You can also send them a mail to inform them about the loss.

Step 2: File a Police FIR

Next up you should t file an FIR or First Information Report at the nearest police station. Remember to obtain a copy of the Police FIR as you will need to submit it to your motor insurance company. The FIR acts as proof of the claim of not being able to find your car insurance papers. Thus, you need to submit the FIR copy to obtain your duplicate insurance policy papers.

Step 3: Publish a Newspaper Advertisement

Besides filing a Police FIR, you will also need to get an advertisement published in a newspaper to obtain a duplicate copy of your car insurance papers. The advertisement should be published in a newspaper that circulates across the state in which you lost your policy document. However, the insurance company will not pay for the cost of publishing the advertisement. Therefore, keep the cost in mind while selecting the newspaper for publishing your ad.

Step 4: Submit Application to Insurer

Next, you need to submit a written application to your car insurance company requesting them to issue a duplicate copy of your four-wheeler policy document. The application should talk about how you lost your policy papers and should consist of details, such as your name, car insurance policy number, coverage type, date of issuance, etc. Submit the hard copy of the application to your insurer along with the copy of your registered Police FIR.

Step 5: Obtain an Indemnity Bond

Lastly, you need to get an indemnity bond made and submit it to your car insurance provider to obtain the duplicate policy papers. The bond should include your full name and contain the signatures of two witnesses. You will have to buy the stamp paper and get the bond acknowledged by a notary. Your request to obtain the duplicate car insurance papers will only be processed once you submit the indemnity bond to your insurer.
