Insurance offers much-needed financial protection in case of a crisis. When vehicle insurance is mandatory in India, you can’t afford to lose it. How to Get Duplicate Car Insurance Papers?
There are two ways of obtaining the duplicate copy of your car insurance papers - online and offline. The online process involves downloading the copy of your policy document while the offline process involves obtaining its hard copy. Both the process is extremely easy. Since the offline process was being used traditionally, let’s talk about it first.
Following are the steps to obtain duplicate car insurance papers:
Notify Your Car Insurance Provider
The first thing that you need to do is to inform your motor insurance company about the loss of your car insurance policy document. Try to notify your insurer as soon as possible so that your insurance company can commence the process of issuing a duplicate policy document at the earliest. You can inform your insurer by calling them on their claim assistance number or toll-free number. You can also shoot them a mail to inform them about the loss. The phone number/ toll-free number and the email id can be found on the website of the insurance company.
File a Police FIR
Once you realise that you have lost your car insurance policy document, you must file an FIR or First Information Report in the nearest police station. Remember to obtain a copy of the Police FIR as you will need to submit it to your motor insurance company. The FIR acts as a proof of claim of not being able to find your car insurance papers and thus, needs to be submitted to obtain your duplicate policy papers.
Publish a Newspaper Advertisement
Besides filing a Police FIR, you will also need to get an advertisement published in a newspaper to obtain the duplicate copy of your car insurance papers. The advertisement should be published in a newspaper that circulates across the state in which you lost your policy document. The insurance company will not pay for the cost of publishing the advertisement. Therefore, keep the cost in mind while selecting the newspaper for publishing your ad.
Submit Application to Insurer
Next, you need to submit a written application to your car insurance company requesting them to issue a duplicate copy of your policy document. The application should talk about how you lost your policy papers and should consist of details, such as your name, car insurance policy number, coverage type, date of issuance, etc. Submit the hard copy of the application to your insurer along with the copy of your registered Police FIR.
Obtain an Indemnity Bond
Lastly, you need to get an indemnity bond made and submit it to your car insurance provider to obtain the duplicate policy papers. The bond should include your full name and contain signatures of two witnesses. You will have to buy the stamp paper and get the bond acknowledged by a notary. Your request to obtain the duplicate car insurance papers will only be processed once you submit the indemnity bond to your insurer.
How to Download Car Insurance Copy?
Contrary to the offline method, the online method is quicker and can be performed from the comforts of your home. A person can download a copy of his car insurance policy if it was purchased online. In case you had purchased your car insurance policy online, you can download the duplicate policy document by following the steps given below:
- Visit the website from where you had purchased car insurance
- Login to your account by entering the requested details, such as your policy number, name, phone number, etc.
- After logging in, go to the option of downloading policy document
- You may receive an email from your insurer consisting of your car insurance policy document
- Download the policy document and get it printed.
Ans: The policy number of your car insurance is mentioned in your policy document. If you don’t have your policy document, you can find your policy number by following one of the methods given below:
- You can check your policy number by logging into the official website or mobile application of your motor insurance provider.
- You can contact your insurance agent to know the policy number if you purchased your car insurance through an agent.
- You can call on the registered phone number/ toll-free number of your insurer to know the policy number. The number will be available on the insurer’s website.
- You can visit the nearest branch of your insurance company to know the policy number.
- You can find your car insurance policy number on the website of Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) as it maintains records of all motor insurance policies in India.
Ans: No. A policy number is an exclusive number issued to each policyholder on purchase of car insurance. On the other hand, a group number is a number issued to a group or company that purchases a group insurance policy.
Ans: Yes. You can get the duplicate car insurance papers if you have lost your original policy document. All you need to do is download the policy from your insurer’s website or request your insurance company to issue you a duplicate policy document.
