What is a Car Registration Number?

A car registration number is a 10-digit number issued to a car by the RTO of your district. When you buy a car, it is obligatory to register it within 30 days from the date of buying at the nearest RTO. Then, the respective RTO will allot a unique number to the car to become its identity or number plate.

Typically, this number's first two alphabets indicate the state code, the next two digits mean the specific RTO where the car is registered, the next is the series within the RTO, and the remaining four digits are the unique identification number of the registered vehicle.

Moreover, to simplify registration of vehicles and make it easier for those who often relocate for work, the government of India introduced BH (Bharat Series) registration number plate in 2021. In a BH series number, the first two digits represent the year of vehicle registration; the next is 'BH', then the 4-digit unique number of the registered vehicle, and the last two are the random alphabets.

Just like a registration number is essential for vehicle identification, car insurance is equally crucial for both the financial & legal protection of vehicle owners against unexpected events. Regardless of the type of number plate you choose, a registration number is required to buy a car insurance policy.

      • At the time of Policy Renewal - For the renewal of the car insurance policy, you will need vehicle insurance details.. You will also need this number for transferring the existing NCB to the new policy.
      • For Verification of Car Details - When the traffic police stop your car during random checks and ask to see your car insurance policy, you can either show your policy document or share your policy number so they can cross-check its validity.
      • To Apply for Duplicate Car Insurance Policy Documents - If you have lost the original policy documents, you can download a duplicate copy of your car insurance policy in just a few minutes using your policy number.

      Wrapping Up!

Car insurance is essential to protect vehicles financially and abide by the law. This makes it important to renew your car policy on time. If you wish to know the policy end date and do not have policy details, you can use the car plate number to get car insurance details.
