Being the capital of two major states in India, Chandigarh attracts a large population from all over the country. This city is known for its well-planned and maintained infrastructure. But along with an increasing population, the number of vehicles on road is also increasing. This has caused a lot of congestion in the city along with a rise in road accidents, which has made the city traffic police more vigilant about Chandigarh traffic rules and fines.
To maintain smooth traffic and road safety, the Government has imposed the strictest rules and regulations in Chandigarh. Anyone who is found breaking traffic rules on roads will be subject to the heaviest fines.
The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 outlines the traffic rules and fines that are levied in case anyone is found breaking the traffic rules. These traffic rules apply all over India and every car driver on road in Chandigarh should follow them responsibly if he/she does not want to earn a challan.
Moreover, as per the recent amendments under Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, the traffic fines and penalties for traffic rules violations have been substantially increased. The new traffic challan rates came into effect from 1st September 2019.
Despite this amendment, there has been a 33% increase in road accidents in Chandigarh in 2021 as per a study by the UT Traffic Police. Such an alarming figure does require efforts on part of the people to take traffic rules more seriously.
According to the Chandigarh traffic rules, you must carry the following documents with you while driving to avoid paying a heavy traffic challan to the police:
If a car driver fails to show any of these documents to the traffic police, he/she will be subject to a traffic challan for violating Chandigarh traffic rules.
