Centuries ago, long before modern diplomacy took root, the Kingdom of Bohemia—now part of the Czech Republic— traded with India in precious goods and sought-after spices, laying the foundation for a relationship that would evolve. Today, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in India is a committed custodian of this enduring connection. Through high-level visits, cultural programs, educational partnerships, and essential services like visa issuance, the Embassy continues to strengthen the ties between these two vibrant nations.

India and the Czech Republic Relations

Diplomatic relations between India and the former Czechoslovakia were established on 18 November 1947. Following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, India promptly recognised the Czech Republic, and the two countries continued to enjoy strong and friendly bilateral ties.

  • High-Level Visits: High-ranking officials from both countries have maintained a cordial relationship through frequent visits. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala visited India in January 2024, during which both sides adopted the Joint Statement: India-Czechia Strategic Partnership on Innovation to start collaborations in science, technology, security, and trade to have a strategic approach to a sustainable economy.
  • Education: The roots of academic collaboration in the Czech Republic are profound. Indology was introduced by establishing a Chair in Sanskrit at Prague's prestigious Charles University as early as the 1850s. Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil are still taught there today. Around 1,500 Indian students in the Czech Republic are pursuing higher education in engineering, medicine, life sciences, and physical sciences.
  • Tourism: The Czech Republic welcomes approximately 70,000 Indian tourists each year. For short-term travel, Indian tourists need to obtain a Schengen visa. Around 12,000 Czech citizens visit India annually, benefiting from the simplified e-visa process.
  • Indians in the Czech Republic: The Indian community in the Czech Republic comprises nearly 9,000 individuals, primarily IT professionals, entrepreneurs, and students. Active Indian associations, both formal and informal, contribute to cultural exchange and organise regular community events.

Services Offered By the Czech Republic Embassy and Honorary Consulates in India

The Czech Republic's Embassy in India maintains diplomatic relationships between the two countries, processes visa applications, and provides various services to Czechs living in India. The Honorary Consulates support the functions of the Embassy in their respective jurisdictions, except for visa issuance.

  • Czech Republic Visa: The Embassy handles issuing Schengen short-stay visas, long-term visas, and residence permits to Indian citizens travelling for tourism, study, work, family reunification, or other eligible purposes.
  • Criminal Record Certificates: Individuals requiring a Czech criminal record certificate for immigration, employment, or legal matters may apply through the Embassy. The service includes verifying and issuing the official certificate from the Czech authorities.
  • Superlegalisation of Documents: The Embassy is authorised to perform superlegalisation, a high-level attestation confirming the authenticity of public documents issued in India. This process involves verifying the signature, seal, or stamp of the Indian authority on the document, making it valid for official use in the Czech Republic.
  • Activities Related to Diplomatic Relationships: The Embassy plays a pivotal role in maintaining bilateral relations between the Czech Republic and India. It includes hosting official delegations, facilitating governmental and cultural exchange programs, and promoting trade, education, science, and technology cooperation.
  • Emergency Assistance to Czech Nationals: In cases of distress, such as accidents, arrests, lost/stolen passports, or lost money, the Embassy provides emergency support to Czech citizens residing in or visiting India. The Embassy's assistance includes coordination with local authorities, travel documentation, and urgent consular aid.
