India and the Czech Republic Relations
Diplomatic relations between India and the former Czechoslovakia were established on 18 November 1947. Following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, India promptly recognised the Czech Republic, and the two countries continued to enjoy strong and friendly bilateral ties.
- High-Level Visits: High-ranking officials from both countries have maintained a cordial relationship through frequent visits. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala visited India in January 2024, during which both sides adopted the Joint Statement: India-Czechia Strategic Partnership on Innovation to start collaborations in science, technology, security, and trade to have a strategic approach to a sustainable economy.
- Education: The roots of academic collaboration in the Czech Republic are profound. Indology was introduced by establishing a Chair in Sanskrit at Prague's prestigious Charles University as early as the 1850s. Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil are still taught there today. Around 1,500 Indian students in the Czech Republic are pursuing higher education in engineering, medicine, life sciences, and physical sciences.
- Tourism: The Czech Republic welcomes approximately 70,000 Indian tourists each year. For short-term travel, Indian tourists need to obtain a Schengen visa. Around 12,000 Czech citizens visit India annually, benefiting from the simplified e-visa process.
- Indians in the Czech Republic: The Indian community in the Czech Republic comprises nearly 9,000 individuals, primarily IT professionals, entrepreneurs, and students. Active Indian associations, both formal and informal, contribute to cultural exchange and organise regular community events.
