Chief Minister's Elderly Health Insurance Scheme: Tamil Nadu

The Chief Minister's Elderly Health Insurance Scheme was announced by the Government of Tamil Nadu on August 17, 2026, in order to cater to the medical requirements of the ageing population of Tamil Nadu. Following the footsteps of the CMCHIS, it provides free cashless health insurance benefits to the elderly population up to a maximum of ₹5 lakhs per year. In addition to this, there is also a separate corpus fund provided up to ₹23 lakhs in case of expensive medical treatment. The scheme ensures that senior citizens aged 70 years and above can access necessary medical treatment without an income limit, helping reduce their financial burden.

Why was the Chief Minister's Elderly Health Insurance Scheme Introduced

Prior to this scheme, senior citizens of Tamil Nadu falling beyond the low-income group had to bear the cost of expensive medical facilities themselves. The coverage under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) was only available to families having a yearly income below ₹1.2 lakhs. Consequently, many senior citizens, including aged people living in old age homes and senior citizens residing slightly above the poverty line, found it hard to have access to health insurance provided by the government.

In order to address this gap, the government of Tamil Nadu launched the Chief Minister's Elderly Health Insurance Scheme on 17 August 2026. The health insurance scheme provides free cashless hospitalisation facility to about 38 lakh people who are above the age of 70 years. By eliminating all income limits, this scheme makes sure that universal access is provided to secondary and tertiary healthcare with an upper limit of coverage of ₹5 lakh for general cases and ₹23 lakh for complicated surgery cases such as organ transplantations.
