How Will Modifications Affect My Car Insurance?

Modifying your car enhances its performance or aesthetics, but it may also influence your car insurance in several ways. Depending on the type of modification, it may increase your premium costs, void your policy or lead to claim rejection if not declared to your insurer. Let's understand how specific modifications can affect your car insurance, what happens if you do not tell your insurer about them and some important considerations before making any upgrades.Read more

How Different Modifications May Impact Your Car Insurance

Here is an overview of different modifications and their impact on car insurance coverage:

Modification Impact on Car Insurance What You Should Know
Audio & Infotainment (Android Auto/Apple CarPlay) Coverage for aftermarket systems depends on your policy terms. Check with your insurer how aftermarket audio and infotainment accessories are treated.
PPF, Ceramic Coating & Vinyl Wraps Claim settlement varies between insurers and policy terms. Check whether these cosmetic modifications can be included in your coverage.
Aftermarket Lighting Systems May complicate claims if the modification contributes to an accident. Ensure the lighting complies with regulations and is installed properly.
Dashcams & GPS Tracking Devices Have little to no impact on premiums but can support claims. Professional installation helps avoid electrical or wiring issues.
Alloy Wheels Replacement may not be fully covered unless declared to the insurer. Inform your insurer so they are included in your coverage.
CNG/LPG Conversion Kits Fuel conversion changes the vehicle's original specifications. Use an approved kit, update the RC, and inform your insurer.
Performance Upgrades Undeclared modifications may complicate underwriting and claim settlement. Declare performance modifications to your insurer.
Suspension Modifications May affect claims if the modification contributes to damage or an accident. Use quality components and have them installed by experienced professionals.
Body Kits & Exterior Styling Accessories Custom parts can be expensive to replace after a collision. Check whether aftermarket exterior accessories are covered.
Roof Racks & Utility Accessories Coverage for accidental damage or theft depends on your policy. Ensure proper installation, avoid overloading, and verify coverage with your insurer.

    Consider this scenario:

If you own a Mahindra Thar and install an aftermarket metal bull bar, it may affect the vehicle's original specifications and safety characteristics. If you do not disclose this modification to your insurer, it could complicate your claim process if it is damaged in an accident.

Legal Framework for Car Modifications in India

In India, car modifications are heavily restricted and regulated under Section 52 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. According to the 2019 Supreme Court of India ruling, the government bans alterations that compromise the manufacturer's original structural integrity, public safety or environmental standards. Violation of these guidelines can lead to strict penalties, including fines that range from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 20,000, vehicle impoundment, cancellation of the vehicle's registration certificate (RC), and a potential impact on the validity of your car insurance.

Illegal (Prohibited) Vehicle Modifications in India

    • Tinted Window Films: Rule 100 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) states that the front/rear windscreens must maintain at least 70% visual light transmission (VLT), and side windows must maintain at least 50% VLT using only factory-tinted window glass.
    • Pressure Horns: Horns exceeding a volume threshold of 100 decibels or producing multi-tone siren sounds are banned.
    • Structural & Chassis Alterations: Cutting the body, stretching the frame (e.g., limousine conversions), or changing the original structural layout is strictly prohibited.
    • Loud Exhausts and Muffler Removal: Installing straight pipes or loud aftermarket exhausts that exceed standard noise limits or alter factory emission settings is banned.
    • Bull Bars & Crash Guards: Front or rear crash guards are banned because they bypass vehicle crumple zones, interfere with airbag sensors, and cause severe injury to pedestrians during collisions.
    • Oversized Wheels & Tires: Rims or tyres that stick out from the vehicle's side body line are illegal.

    Modifications That Require RTO Approval

While some modifications are legal, they should be officially declared, inspected, and updated in your vehicle RC:

    • Full Colour Changes: Repainting the car or applying a full body wrap in a different colour requires prior RTO permission and an updated RC. Army Green colour is strictly banned for civilian cars.
    • Engine Swap: Replacing a broken engine is legal, but the replacement block's capacity must not exceed the manufacturer's original core specifications. Also, the engine number must be re-registered.
    • External Fuel Kits: Installing aftermarket CNG or LPG kits is legal if the kit is ARAI-approved and endorsed on the RC.
    • Adaptive Modifications: Installing hand-operated accelerators or automatic clutches in a car for a differently abled driver is completely allowed with RTO registration.

Premitted (Legal) Modifications That Generally Have Little to No Impact on Car Insurance

Here are some modifications that are less likely to affect your car insurance coverage and claims when installed properly and used as per regulations:

    • Seat covers
    • Floor mats
    • Steering wheel covers
    • Door sill protectors
    • Mud flaps
    • Mobile phone holders
    • Window sunshades (where legally allowed)

Common Car Modification and Insurance Myths vs Facts

There are many misconceptions about vehicle modifications and how they impact car insurance coverage. Here is the reality:

Myth: Coupler-to-coupler upgrades never impact warranty or car insurance.

Fact: Insurers may even consider plug-and-play modifications if they contribute to a fault, damage or claim.

Myth: Only performance upgrades affect insurance.

Fact: Cosmetic and utility modifications can also influence your premium, coverage, or claim eligibility.

Myth: Car insurance companies treat factory-fitted and aftermarket accessories in the same manner.

Fact: Aftermarket accessories may need to be declared and may not be covered automatically.

Myth: Removing a modification before raising a claim avoids issues.

Fact: If the modification is linked to the damage, it may still impact claim assessment.

Myth: Every car modification must be reported to the insurer.

Fact: Generally, only modifications that change the car's value, specifications, or repair cost need to be disclosed.

How to Safely Modify Your Car Without Impacting Insurance Coverage?

To ensure your car insurance remains unaffected when you make modifications, follow these steps:

    1. Contact your insurer before making any permanent physical or mechanical changes to check if they will cover it.
    2. Register major upgrades with your local RTO to update your RC.
    3. Submit proof of the upgrades to your insurer to get an official policy endorsement in writing.
