While official diplomatic relations were established much later, the partnership has developed steadily. Estonia opened its resident Embassy in New Delhi in February 2012. Since then, the embassy has tried to keep the diplomatic ties strong and explore new areas of cooperation. Estonia is actively encouraging Indian IT companies to set up data centres there. Green-tech sectors such as green hydrogen and wind energy, along with fields like genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, and life sciences, also offer scope for collaboration.
  • e-Residency and Start-up Visa: Around 3,000 Indians have become e-residents of Estonia. Indians have started nearly 700 companies there, benefitting from e-Residency and Start-up Visa. In 2019, India was among the top three countries receiving Start-up Visas. 124 visas were given to employees and 40 to founders.
  • Cultural Relations: Cultural exchanges between Estonia and India are pretty strong and varied. India offers scholarships through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme. Tallinn University teaches Hindi and Indian philosophy, culture, and history. Estonian films have also participated in film festivals in India.
