8 Things to Know About Malaysia

Malaysia can be on the expensive end of your budget spectrum as the accommodation costs more than some neighbours. Here are some essential things to know before visiting Malaysia:

  1. Malaysian Food

Malaysian food is a unique mix of influences from Indian, Chinese, and Malay cuisines. It’s often best enjoyed at food stalls or hawker centres, where you can try dishes like Nasi Kandar, Penang Laksa, and Hokkien Mee. These meals are fresh and flavoured, with ingredients reflecting the country’s rich cultural diversity. Whether in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, or Ipoh, you're never far from a plate of something tasty, from spicy curries to noodle soups.

  2. Partying is Expensive

When planning a party in Malaysia, you can spend over your budget because of the heavy taxes on alcohol throughout the country. Alcohol is strictly prohibited to Muslims, whether travellers or Malaysians, but others can purchase it from any authorised seller.

  3. Local Etiquettes and Customs

In Malaysia, respecting local customs and traditions is essential. Use your thumb instead of your index finger when pointing, as pointing with the latter is considered impolite. Keep your voice down in public, as raising it is seen as disrespectful. Always use your right hand when shaking hands or passing items, as the left hand is traditionally considered unclean in Islamic culture. It's also important to dress modestly, especially in rural areas and when visiting religious sites. These small gestures help show respect for Malaysia’s rich cultural and religious diversity.

  4. Vaccination Recommendations

Malaysia has a biodiverse tropical climate; therefore, you must get the recommended vaccinations for the following diseases:

    • Hepatitis A
    • Hepatitis B
    • Typhoid
    • Cholera
    • Yellow Fever
    • Japanese Encephalitis

You should also protect yourself against mosquitoes and insects when travelling to Malaysia.

  5. Home to the World’s Largest Flower

Many travellers might be oblivious to a hidden wonder in Malaysia, the Rafflesia Arnoldii - the world’s largest flower. Raflessia is a scarce flower that cannot be cultivated outside its natural ecosystem, the southeast region of Asia. You would want to have a photo with the giant of flowers. To locate the flower, you need to book a local guide who knows the prime locations to see the Rafflesia.

  6. Tap Water is Not Drinkable

You must drink tap water in Malaysia because of the rising pollution of water sources there. Either boil the water or purchase filtered bottled water for drinking. If you are staying at some hotel, you should get an option for free refiling there.

  7. Getting Around in Malaysia

Getting around Malaysia is affordable and convenient, with several options for travellers. Modern buses link significant towns and cities, offering a comfortable and low-cost way to explore the Peninsula. Popular booking platforms like 12Go make it easy to plan bus journeys, while operators like KKKL ensure a smooth experience. The Electric Train Service (ETS) is a reliable choice for faster travel between cities.

  8. No Uber in Malaysia

Uber, like many other countries in that part of Southeast Asia, does not offer its services. You can use alternatives like Grab or local taxi services, which are affordable and widely accessible.

Travel Tips for Malaysia

Malaysia is generally safe for travellers of both sexes, but when travelling to remote places, you should beware of local pickpockets and thieves. As a traveller, whether solo or a part of a group, you will find Malaysia a soothing experience. These practical things to do before going to Malaysia will make your itinerary a smooth experience:

  • Safe with Travel Insurance

While the Malaysian government does not require travel insurance, it is still one of the most recommended things to do before visiting Malaysia. Travel insurance will relieve foreign travellers from the financial worries of unexpected medical expenses, baggage loss or theft, flight cancellation, etc.
  • Carry Cash in Remote Locations

ATMs are widespread in major cities like Kuala Lumpur and George Town, but when going deeper into the countryside, you will find it challenging to get hold of an ATM. Therefore, it is better to carry cash when travelling to remote locations, as the local markets will be unlikely to accept international or even local cards.
  • Pack for the Eternal Summer of Malaysia

Malaysia gives you a full year of typical tropical summer. The temperatures remain high and humid throughout the year. You should pack light and loose clothing for Malaysia. Also, you can pack some swimwear if you plan to have quality beach time. As for the footwear, for beaches, you should pack up some flip-flops; otherwise, regular shoes will do just fine.
  • Carry Sunscreen

Malaysia gets a year-round quota for sunlight, which may be too much for foreign travellers; therefore, you should wear sunscreen regularly to protect yourself from tan and skin burns.
  • Wi-Fi and SIM options for Tourists

Malaysia is a frontrunner in the world when it comes to technology. When travelling to Malaysia, you can choose connectivity options such as pocket Wi-Fi, local SIM cards, or e-sim. Malaysian airports provide Klook pocket Wi-Fi at a low price. For local SIM card services, Celcom and Hotlink are some of the best options around the block.
