Form 25- Application for Renewal of Registration Certificate

In India, every vehicle must have a valid Registration Certificate (RC) to legally ply on public roads. The RC for private vehicles is valid for a specific period from the initial date of registration, after which vehicle owners must renew it using Form 25. What is Form 25?

Form 25 is used to apply for the renewal of the vehicle's RC when the original validity expires. The vehicle owner has to submit the form to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) along with the required documents and the renewal fee. The RTO may then inspect the vehicle before approving the renewal and extending the Registration Certificate (RC), usually for five years. The renewal of the Registration Certificate can be applied for only 60 days prior to the expiration.

Who Needs to Submit Form 25?

Vehicle owners whose Registration Certificate (RC) is expiring in a period of 60 days must submit Form 25. The RC of a private vehicle in India is valid for 15 years starting from the vehicle registration date. If the owner wants to keep using the vehicle after this period, they must apply for renewal by submitting Form 25 to the RTO.

What is the Difference Between Form 25 and Form 26?

The difference between Form 25 and Form 26 is tabulated below:

      Parameters Form 25 Form 26
Purpose Used to apply for the renewal of the RC of a motor vehicle. Used to apply for a duplicate copy of the RC.
When is it issued? It is used when the RC of a vehicle is about to expire. It is used when the original RC is lost/damaged/tampered
Reason for Application The vehicle's registration period has expired or is about to expire. The original RC has been lost, stolen, torn, damaged, or destroyed.
Impact on Validity The RC is usually valid for another 5 years after inspection by the RTO. There is no change in validity because it only replaces the lost or damaged RC.
Vehicle Inspection The vehicle may need to be inspected before the RC renewal is approved. Vehicle inspection is usually not required since the registration already exists, and only a duplicate is issued.
