RTO Indore


The Transport Department of Madhya Pradesh has 20 RTOs including ARTOs. RTO Indore is one of them, which functions under the provisions of Indian Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (Section 213). The department is supervised by the Transport Commissioner.

How to Register a Vehicle in Indore?

The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 has made it mandatory to register every vehicle to drive on the roads. One can register his/her vehicle with the concerned state or city RTO by applying through an application form, along with the required documents. The registration card is a smart card, which contains the details such as date of registration, vehicle model, place of registration etc.

Documents Required to Register a New Vehicle

To register a new vehicle one needs to furnish the below documents:

1. Duly filled Form 20/ with the mark of chassis number and vehicle engine

2. Form 21/Sale certificate obtained from the vehicle dealer

3. Form 22/Road worthiness certificate given by the vehicle manufacturer

4. Self-attested copy of vehicle insurance document

5. Self-attested address proof to register the vehicle

6. Form 34/from the financer in case the vehicle is purchased on loan

7. Applicable one-time road tax

8. Applicable registration fee

9. PAN Card or Form 60 & 61, whichever is applicable

10. Invoice of manufacturer




Validity Period of Registration Card in Indore

  • The registration certificate is valid throughout the country
  • The registration card is issued for the period of 15 years for private vehicles. After that, it can be renewed for 5 years
  • In case of commercial vehicles, the registration card is offered for the period of 2 years and after that, a fitness certificate can be availed for every year from the RTO Indore
  • Driving License (DL) issued for transport vehicle will be valid for three years

Documents for Temporary Registration

Temporary Registration requires following documents:

  • Form 21/ Sales Certificate obtained from the dealer
  • Form 22/ Road worthiness certificate from the manufacturers
  • Form 22A from the body-builder of the vehicle
  • Valid insurance document
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC)
  • Address proof of the owner
  • Design approval from the STA in case of Trailer or Semi Trailer vehicle
  • Form 21/ original sales certificate from the concerned Authorities if the vehicle belongs to ex-army
  • In case of an imported vehicle, clearance certificate from the customs is required
  • Applicable tax as per the state government of Madhya Pradesh

Documents Required for Permanent Registration

An application in Form 20 should be made with the Registering Authority within 7 days in order to avail permanent registration card. The documents required are:

  • Form 20/Permanent registration application form
  • Form 21/ Sales Certificate obtained from the dealer
  • Form 22/ Road worthiness certificate from the manufacturers
  • Insurance documents of the vehicle
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC)
  • Address proof of the owner
  • Design approval from the STA in case of Trailer or Semi Trailer vehicle
  • Form 21/ original sales certificate from the concerned Authorities if the vehicle belongs to ex-army
  • In case of an imported vehicle, clearance certificate from the customs is required

Renewal of Certificate of Registration

After 15 years from the date of first registration of a vehicle, the registration card needs to be renewed. The vehicle owner should make an application for renewal in Form 25 within 60 days of its expiry and by paying the appropriate fee. The same needs to be submitted to RTO Indore. After inspecting the vehicle and verifying the documents, RTO Indore renews the registration card and allots the renewed RC to the vehicle

Documents Required to Renew RC in Indore

Various documents required to renew the registration card are:

  • Original Certificate of Registration
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate.
  • Valid insurance Certificate
  • Other related documents as per notified

How to Issue a Duplicate Registration Certificate in Indore

A duplicate registration card can be availed in case of loss or if the original one is worn out. An application in this regard shall be made in Form 26. If the vehicle is purchased on loan, the signature of the financer will be required on Form 26 in duplicate and the applicable fee is required to avail a duplicate copy of RC. The same needs to submitted to the RTO Indore, under whose jurisdiction the vehicle is.

Required Documents

  • Police FIR in case of loss of original registration certificate
  • Original registration certificate (In case of damage)

Transfer of Ownership for Certificate of Registration

If a vehicle is bought from another state, despite it is registered with the RTO of that state or city, it needs to be re-registered with RTO Indore again. Moreover, as one can’t use the vehicle detail or number plate of the previous owner and it needs to be transferred to the new owner, the transfer of ownership process can be done by approaching RTO Indore. The vehicle owner needs to file an application in Form 29 or Form 30 in case of loan hypothecation and submit the same to the concerned RTO.

Documents Required for Transfer of Ownership

To transfer the ownership, the following documents are required:

  • Certificate of Registration in Original
  • Form 29 duly filled
  • Form 30 duly filled
  • Applicable registration fee
  • Copy of insurance documents
  • No Objection Certificate in case the vehicle is bought from another sate
  • No Objection Certificate from the financier if the vehicle is purchased on loan
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC)
  • Address proof of the vehicle owner
  • An affidavit obtained from the seller/purchaser for the sale/purchase of the vehicle
  • Attested copy of PAN Card or Form 60

Change of Address in RC in Indore

A new address can be added in the Registration Certificate whenever is required. The vehicle owner needs to apply with an application form and the required documents to be submitted to the RTO Indore. Usually, the below documents are required in order to change in address:

  • Certificate of Registration in original
  • Form 33 duly filled up
  • Attested copy of valid vehicle insurance policy
  • Applicable fee for registration
  • Attested copy of valid Pollution under Control Certificate
  • Attested copy of address proof of the owner
  • PAN Card or Form 60 & 61(attested copy)
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the financer in case of loan hypothecation (if the vehicle is bought on loan)

Registration of Non-transport or Private Vehicle

In case of a private vehicle, the dealer will guide the vehicle owner through the whole process. The vehicle owner will have to submit the required documents to avail the registration certificate.

The dealer will enrol the vehicle online via Online dealer Point Registration Process, on payment of the required fees and tax online. Initially, a registration number will be provided and the documents will be submitted to the RTO Indore for verification. On approval of RTO, the registration smart card will be printed and sent to the registered address of the vehicle owner.

I have obtained a learner licence in Indore, is it valid in Mumbai?

A Driving License can be issued from the Registering Authority that is RTO of the concerned city/district/state. If you are instructed from a driving school you can avail it from there as well.

My DL is expired two months back. Can I renew it or will I have to apply for a new one?

An expired DL can be renewed within 5  years from its date of expiry. However, you’ll have to pay the penalty for this period excluding the first 30 days. You have 30 days grace period to renew it, if not you can renew it after paying the penalties.

What are the documents should I carry while driving?

You should always carry the below documents whenever outwith your prized possession:

  • Driving licence
  • Insurance certificate
  • Registration certificate
  • PUC certificate
  • Taxation certificate
  • Road permit and fitness certificate (for transport vehicles)

Which documents do I need to furnish in support of age proof?

You can produce any of the following documents:

  • Birth Certificate
  • School leaving certificate
  • SSC Certificate
  • Passport
  • Civil Surgeon’s Certificate

What are the documents can I produce in support of residential address?

Any of the following document will work:

  • Voter ID card
  • Passport
  • Adhaar Card
  • Utility Bill
  • Life Insurance Policy
  • Telephone Bill
  • Rent Receipt

Which are non-transport vehicles?

Vehicles that are used for personal use or not used for the commercial purpose of the owner, that ate called non-transport vehicle. Usually, bikes, private cars come into this category.

I’ve recently bought a new bike, how long I drive it without registering with the RTO?

Well, nobody is authorised to drive a vehicle without registering it. You’ll have to carry an RC, at least temporary one for the initial stage. Eve a dealer can’t sell a vehicle or deliver without registering it. It can only deliver the vehicle that is temporarily/permanently registered with RTO. You can register the vehicle at the nearest registering authority by filling an application along with the supporting documents. The concerned RTO will investigate the vehicle and verify the documents and finally will allot the registration number. With a valid registration number only, you can drive the vehicle safely on roads.

Can a vehicle register in one state be used in another state?

Well for a temporary period only. A vehicle registered in one state can be driven in another for 12 months. Though, the registration number is valid through the country, if a vehicle is bought from another state, it needs to be re-registered with the RTO of that state or city. Moreover, road taxes are to be paid as well. The owner will have to produce a NOC obtained from the RTO of the state, where the vehicle was registered previously.

I have lost my original RC. What do I do now?

In that case, you can apply for the duplicate registration certificate.

Will I be penalised for not paying the road taxes or if a traffic cop will catch me?

Paying road taxes to the government are compulsory and vehicle with due taxes will not be allowed to drive in public places. The RTO official can detail or seize your vehicle for not paying the road taxes in time.
